Backyard Butterfly Blitz
HeartLands Conservancy is hosting a Backyard Butterfly Blitz from June 1st through July 31st! Summer is upon us and it’s almost butterfly season! During this project, we are encouraging participants to learn more about one of nature’s most iconic species – the butterfly.
All you have to do to participate is:
- Be located in one of the following counties in Illinois: Bond, Clinton, Madison, Monroe, Randolph, St. Clair, or Washington
- Download the iNaturalist App or visit their website
- Take a picture of a butterfly in your backyard or favorite natural area and upload it using the Taxa: Butterflies
Other iNaturalist users will help you ID the species, although you are encouraged to try to figure it out on your own, too! Observations will help researchers understand more about butterflies in our region.
We’ll announce:
- Most Species Observed
- Most Observations
- Rarest Observation
- Honorable Mention
Let’s have some Citizen Science fun!
Ps – If you would like to share your findings on Facebook or Instagram, please use #BackyardButterflyBlitz so we can give them a thumbs up!
