Tree Stewards Training Session 1 – Basic Tree Biology

Event Series Event Series (See All)

March 5 @ 6:00 pm 8:00 pm CST

Become an HLC Tree Steward!

HeartLands Conservancy is excited to announce the return of the Tree Stewards volunteer program, where volunteers will help look after and take care of new trees in southern Illinois communities.

In Tree Stewards Session 1, class participants will receive information on basic tree biology from Laura Schaefer, Instructor at Southwestern Illinois College (SWIC).

Register is required to attend the Tree Stewards Program: Six free classes providing education on trees, their benefits, care and needs, identification, and more! Practical, hands-on learning experiences will be given in six key areas:

  • Basic tree biology (03/05/24)
  • Tree identification (03/12/24)
  • Soils (03/19/24)
  • Selection and placement (03/26/24)
  • Pruning (04/09/24)
  • Insects and diseases (04/16/24)

No prior experience is needed to become a Tree Steward. We ask that Tree Stewards provide 24 hours of volunteer service throughout the year in community forests, parks, and HLC projects such as at the Swansea Exploration Garden.

We will primarily contact you via email.
No experience is required to participate in the program; this helps us gauge participants' baselines of understanding.
