Since 1989 HeartLands Conservancy has worked with landowners and community leaders to conserve more than 10,000 acres of natural areas, farms, parks, and gardens in southwestern Illinois.

Some properties are owned by HeartLands Conservancy, some are managed by HeartLands Conservancy or supported by a “friends group”. Some have been transferred to a unit of government or another nonprofit for long-term ownership and stewardship. For other sites, HeartLands Conservancy provided assistance in the acquisition, development, management, or operations.

The following are places, many open to the public, that have been preserved in southern Illinois.
