Overview
HeartLands Conservancy, in partnership with Clifftop, acquired the 115-acre βMill Creek Natural Areaβ in 2012. The parcel contains sandstone canyons and gorges and cliff systems that host unusual plant communities. A significant stretch of Mill Creek also winds through the property. The area hosts plant species found much further north, such as club moss, cinnamon fern, and bishopβs cap.
In 2019, HeartLands Conservancy and Clifftop transferred Mill Creek to the State of Illinois for inclusion in the Swayne Hollow Nature Preserve system – a highly sensitive ecological area.
