Recent federal tax law changes have introduced several provisions that may affect charitable giving. Below are answers to common questions from supporters of HeartLands Conservancy about how these updates may influence their philanthropy.

What tax law changes might affect charitable giving in 2026?

Recent updates to federal tax law created new opportunities for many taxpayers to receive a charitable deduction, even if they do not itemize their taxes. In addition, certain rules affecting itemized deductions and retirement distributions remain important considerations when planning charitable gifts.

Because individual circumstances vary, we always recommend discussing your plans with a tax advisor or financial professional.

Can I still receive a charitable deduction if I take the standard deduction?

Yes. Beginning in 2026, taxpayers who take the standard deduction may also deduct certain cash charitable gifts.

The law allows:

  • Up to $1,000 in charitable cash contributions for single filers, or
  • Up to $2,000 for married couples filing jointly

This deduction applies even if you do not itemize your deductions. However, contributions to donor-advised funds are not eligible for this particular provision.

What are the standard deduction amounts for 2026?

For the 2026 tax year, the standard deduction is:

  • $16,100 for single filers
  • $32,200 for married couples filing jointly

Additional standard deduction amounts may be available for taxpayers age 65 or older, depending on filing status.

Because tax rules can change and individual eligibility varies, consult your tax advisor for guidance specific to your situation.

Are there additional benefits for donors age 65 or older?

Some taxpayers age 65 and older may qualify for additional deductions under temporary tax provisions in effect through 2028, subject to income limits.

These provisions may allow an additional deduction of up to:

  • $6,000 for individuals
  • $12,000 for married couples where both spouses qualify

Because these provisions may phase out at higher income levels, it is important to review the details with your tax professional.

What if I choose to itemize my deductions?

If you itemize your deductions, several rules remain important for charitable giving:

Cash gift deduction limits

You may generally deduct cash gifts to qualified charities up to 60% of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI).

Minimum giving threshold

To claim charitable deductions under the updated rules, your total charitable contributions must generally exceed 0.5% of your AGI.

Reduced tax benefit for highest earners

For taxpayers in the highest income bracket, the effective tax value of deductions may be reduced. This means the tax savings from charitable deductions may be slightly lower than in previous years.

Are non-cash gifts still a good option?

Yes. Many donors choose to give appreciated assets, such as:

In many cases, donating appreciated assets allows you to avoid capital gains tax on the appreciation while still receiving a charitable deduction for the fair market value of the gift.

This can make asset-based giving an especially effective way to support conservation while managing tax obligations.

Can I make a gift from my IRA?

If you are age 70½ or older, you may be eligible to make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) directly from your Individual Retirement Account (IRA).

Benefits of a QCD may include:

  • The distribution is not included in your taxable income
  • It may count toward required minimum distributions (RMDs) if applicable
  • It allows you to support conservation without increasing taxable income

Many supporters find this to be a tax-efficient way to give.
