Everyone lives in a watershed, and all of our watersheds are connected. What happens in one part of the watershed affects the others.

Southwestern Illinois watersheds flow into the Mississippi River – a significant source of drinking water, transportation, commerce, recreation, and wildlife habitat. Healthy watersheds are not only suitable for the people living in them but contribute to a healthier and resilient Mississippi River.

Our approach to addressing water issues in our region involves examining a watershed's existing problems and opportunities. By focusing efficiently on southern Illinois waters by watershed, we can evaluate, protect, and improve the water quality of all of the water in our area.

Each watershed can be analyzed on how it affects the overall water quality and flooding impacted communities in southern Illinois. Comprehensive watershed plans are developed to identify and address these specific issues. Residents and governmental agencies can then use these watershed plans to improve the area they live in.

We've seen over 153,509 acres of community and watershed planning for the health of our local watersheds into thriving resources for communities and wildlife!

Your May donation of at least $50 makes you an active partner and valued member in protecting our watersheds. You'll receive a 'Choose Nature' member t-shirt, so your community knows you choose nature! If you're a current member and decided to upgrade your giving level this May, you'll also receive a 'Choose Nature' member t-shirt.

With extinction rates sweeping, biodiversity loss is critical. According to the 'IDNR 2020 List of Endangered and Threatened Species in Illinois by County', over 142 species in our region alone are at risk of disappearing, many within decades, like the Illinois Chorus Frog and the Ornate Box Turtle.

Biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse don't just threaten animals and plants; it risks the food and water supplies that we regionally rely on.

One way HeartLands Conservancy serves is by strategically planting native tree species and allowing them to regenerate.

Trees are a big deal and vital to the environment. Every year HeartLands Conservancy celebrates trees in a big way through our annual Metro East Tree Week, where we spread the word through various activities and events on the benefits of trees. In the last year, over 1,030 trees have been planted in our region, uplifting communities, restoring biodiversity, and improving the health of ecosystems.

Your partnership and support is important to continue this crucial work in the region we live and love. When you donate this May at least $50, you'll become a valued member and receive a 'Choose Nature' member t-shirt! If you're a current member and decided to upgrade your giving level this May, you'll also receive a 'Choose Nature' member t-shirt.

Our members helped preserve 90 acres of sand prairie habitat to help protect threatened Illinois Chorus Frogs--expanding Poag Sand Prairie.

Sand prairies are rare in Illinois - and our region is one of the very few spots in the state where active preservation is underway.
