Sometimes a gift of land can accomplish far more than protecting a single property. It can create opportunities that continue benefiting conservation for years to come.

In 2025, a generous couple donated their farmland in St. Clair County, near the Mississippi River, to HeartLands Conservancy with a thoughtful vision for its future. They wanted the land to remain in agriculture while also helping conserve additional farmland and natural areas across southern Illinois.

Working closely with the donors, HeartLands Conservancy permanently protected the property with a conservation easement before offering it for sale at its agricultural value. This approach ensured the land would remain productive farmland rather than being lost to future development, while making it possible for a local farm family to purchase it.

In June, that vision became a reality when the farmland was purchased by a local farm family.

Today, the fields will continue producing crops, while the property’s small wooded areas will continue providing wildlife habitat and adding to the natural character of the landscape. Just as importantly, the conservation easement will help ensure that this land remains productive farmland and that its conservation values are protected for generations to come.

The impact doesn’t stop there.

Because the property was donated specifically for this purpose, the proceeds from its sale will now help HeartLands Conservancy conserve additional farmland and other important natural areas throughout southern Illinois.

In other words, one generous gift will continue creating new conservation opportunities long into the future.

This project also reflects one of the many ways people can support conservation.

Some landowners choose to conserve the land they continue to own through a conservation easement. Others make a gift through their will.

And, in special circumstances like this one, a gift of land can both protect an important property and provide resources to help conserve many more.

We’re deeply grateful to the couple who donated the land for their foresight and commitment to conservation.

The new farm owner has already begun caring for this permanently protected land.

Together, they have ensured that this farmland will continue producing food, supporting local agriculture, providing wildlife habitat, and helping conserve even more of the places that make southern Illinois such a special place to call home.
