Illinois Wildflowers reports that this sedge feeds the larvae of several types of skipper butterflies and moths, as well as many other insects. Some birds, including ducks, eat the seeds, while geese may eat the foliage. It is a wet sedge, best suited around ponds, wetlands, and rain gardens, but it also lives in moist meadows and forest edges.

Sedges make excellent ground covers and work well as “filler plants” among other species.
