Our role:  Given the limited amount of open space in southern Illinois communities, HeartLands Conservancy assisted the City of Columbia with grant applications and plans to acquire the park land from the former American Legion. Funding was provided by the City of Columbia and the State of Illinois Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) grant program.

The park is located at Memorial Drive and Locust Street.

Trails & Facilities

American Legion Park houses several ball diamonds, a playground, and an indoor pavilion. 

There are no trails at this park, however there are trails located nearby at Bolm-Schuhkraft Memorial City Park

Overview

American Legion Park
American Legion Park is an important community open space in the heart of Columbia, Illinois. In the early 2010s, American Legion Post 581, sold the property to the City of Columbia. The Legion had provided athletic fields for the community for many decades but could no longer maintain the facilities. 

With the strong growth of the City of Columbia, loss of the open space would have had a significant impact on the 1,300 children and youth who use the atheltic fields and parks space every year. 

By conserving this open space for the community, we’re not just providing a place for rainwater to absorb, but we’re also ensuring spaces for play, relaxation, and gathering in the community.
