🌱 Did you know that volunteering is not only good for the community, but it's also good for YOU?

Here are three reasons why you should volunteer with HeartLands Conservancy:

🟒 Volunteering can be a social event. You can meet new people or bring your family with you! Imagine spending a Saturday morning planting trees with like-minded individuals who share your passion for the environment.

🟒 Volunteering can provide hands-on experience and skills. Whether you're looking to learn new skills, build your resume, or gain experience in a new field, HeartLands Conservancy offers a variety of opportunities for you to grow and develop.

Heads up, everyone! β˜”οΈπŸŒ§

There's lots of rain coming in the area, and that means stormwater runoff could be a problem.

Remember: Only Rain Down the Drain!

Unlike sanitary sewers, which carry water to a treatment plant, storm sewers only go to the nearest body of water like a river, lake, or stormwater pond. The water that enters these drains is not treated.

Any pollutants we pour down the storm drains, like motor oil or paint, will end up in our lakes and rivers, causing harm to the environment. That's why it's so important to be mindful of what goes down our storm drains.

In Collinsville, we used non-toxic paint near storm drains to remind people that only water should pass through storm sewers.

Let's all do our part to protect our environment and keep our waterways clean!

Read the full article from the HLC Magazine, Meanderings Fall/Winter edition to learn how you can help protect our waterways. https://heartlandsconservancy.org/only-rain-down-the-drain/

🌊🌿 Happy World Water Day, everyone! πŸ’¦πŸŒ³

At HeartLands Conservancy, we're all about protecting and restoring our precious water resources.

Wetlands, forests, creeks, floodplains, and rivers are all crucial to ensuring clean water for all. So on this special day, let's raise a glass (of water, of course!) to our amazing regio and all the ways we can help keep it clean and healthy.

One way we do our part is by working with communities and public agencies to install green infrastructure that helps manage the impacts of environmental degradation to keep our water clean and our communities thriving.

Want to learn more about our efforts to protect and restore our water resources?

Check out our website at https://heartlandsconservancy.org/water/.

And don't forget to spread the word - every little action we take can make a big difference! #WorldWaterDay #CleanWater #waterconservation #HeartLandsConservancy πŸŒπŸ’§πŸŒΏπŸŒ³πŸ¦†

🌿🌊 Did you know that HeartLands Conservancy completed a watershed plan for the Canteen - Cahokia Creek watershed in 2018?

We partnered with landowners in the area who were interested in addressing their erosion or nutrient issues and applied for funding under our IEPA Grant. The Grant funds were used to reimburse landowners for 50% of the costs of survey, design, and construction of these projects.

🚍 And now, we're excited to take you on a unique tour of some of the most successful projects built to combat non-point source pollution in the Canteen Creek Watershed! 🌳🌊

HeartLands Conservancy is proud to present the Clean Water, Bright Future: Canteen Creek Watershed Green Infrastructure Tour on April 13, 2023.

We've chartered a bus to take you on a journey through some of the best management practices like porous pavement, rain gardens, and streambank/channel stabilization that were built using Illinois EPA 319 Grant funds.

Lunch will be provided, and registration is limited to 12, so sign up now to secure your spot and learn how these projects are improving the water quality in a regional watershed.

Register now and let's explore together! 🌿🌍https://heartlandsconservancy.org/event/clean-water-bright-future-canteen-creek-watershed-green-infrastructure-tour/ #GreenInfrastructureTour #CleanWaterBrightFuture #HeartLandsConservancy

Have you heard of River Oats?

River Oats help to slow down and capture water before it reaches streams and is one of the native plants you can find in the Exploration Garden's - Native Soil Rain Garden.

Here's a unique fact: In the spring, River Oats produce bright green and broad leaves, and if you look closely, you can spot last year's flowers - tan, flattened spikelets - remaining on the stems above the fresh leaves.

The Native Soil Rain Garden is home to many other native plants; why not visit the garden and try to spot them for yourself?

Remember to purchase your ticket for Martinis in the Meadow, a special Earth Day event benefiting HeartLands Conservancy and The Exploration Garden.

Your ticket purchase supports the ongoing work to transform this former golf course into a stunning public demonstration garden and outdoor classroom.

Celebrate nature with us over delicious martinis and live music on April 21st at Fletcher's Kitchen & Tap.

Purchase your tickets now and be a part of this journey!

For more information, visit https://heartlandsconservancy.org/martinis-in-the-meadow/

To learn about the native plants found in the garden, visit: https://heartlandsconservancy.org/exploration-garden-demonstration-areas/

Happy World Frog Day! 🐸🌎

Today we celebrate these amazing amphibians and raise awareness about their importance in our ecosystem.

Here at HeartLands Conservancy, we're particularly proud of the work we're able to do through our supporters and partners in protecting the Illinois Chorus frog and their habitat.

These frogs may be small, but they play a vital role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. By preserving their habitat, we're helping to ensure the survival of not just the chorus frog, but many other species that rely on this unique and important ecosystem.

So let's give a shoutout to these amazing little creatures and all the conservation efforts being made to protect them!

Want to learn more about frogs?

Join us for our Frog Walk at Poag Sand Prairie on March 31 from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm. This family-friendly walk will take you through one of our favorite natural areas in southwestern Illinois, where you'll have the chance to learn about early spring frogs and their calls.

During the walk, we'll teach you how to identify certain frog calls and see if you can spot any frogs as we make our way through the area. This is a great opportunity to get outside, learn about these amazing creatures, and enjoy the beauty of our natural spaces.

Registration is required, so be sure to sign up at https://heartlandsconservancy.org/event/frog-walk-2/. We can't wait to see you there! 🌿🌳🐸
